John Galloway didn’t just learn the game, he grew up in the backyard of one of its legends. Raised in Camillus, New York, he played for Mike Messere at West Genesee, the winningest coach in the sport’s history, while spending his summers in the front yard of future Syracuse head coach John Desko. He went on to win two national championships for Desko at Syracuse, then learned the craft as a volunteer assistant under John Danowski at Duke and spent four years as an assistant under Chris Gabrielli at Providence. He took over at Jacksonville in 2016 and has led the Dolphins into their winning era, capped by the program’s first NCAA tournament win last season.
Now, on the IMLCA Podcast, powered by IMLCA Recruits, Galloway shares how four generations of coaching legends shaped the program he runs today:
- Coaching lineage — how Messere, Desko, Danowski, and Gabrielli shaped his approach to the game
- Youth development — why a $25 summer rec league and box lacrosse did more for him than travel ball
- Getting cut from varsity — the moment that taught him to respond instead of react
- Character vs. performance — how he balances “culture kids” with players who win games, and why “we only need everybody”
- Jacksonville practice structure — mission plans, four themed quarters, and no drill longer than 10 minutes
- Building a brand — why he treats his social media team as part of the coaching staff
- 3 lacrosse drills — a full-field passing drill, Dolphin GBs, and Polish 4v3s, broken down step by step
- Behind the scenes at IMLCA — his role as advisory chair and giving every Division I coach a voice
